The latest edition of Microsoft’s Security Endpoint Threat Report 2019  revealed that Sri Lanka had the highest number of Free Cryptocurrency Mining encounters in the Asia Pacific region in the previous year. The findings were drawn from an examination of various Microsoft data sources, including the 8 trillion threat signals that Microsoft receives and analyses every day.
Microsoft’s unique access to billions of threat signals every day enables us to gather data and insights to inform our response to cyberattacks as security defences develop and attackers depend on new techniques, said Mary Jo Schrade, Assistant General Counsel, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, Microsoft Asia.

According to the survey, Asia Pacific continues to have a higher-than-average malware and ransomware attack. Encounter rate – 1.6 and 1.7 times higher, respectively, than the rest of the world. Sri Lanka had the second highest malware encounter rate in 2019, with 9.07 percent. Despite a 14 percent drop, this was still 1.7 times the regional average.
Sri Lanka had the highest rate of cryptocurrency mining encounters in the country, according to the survey. Although there was a 45 percent drop from 0.46 in 2018 to 0.25 in 2019. It was still 5 times higher than the regional and global average. During such attacks, cryptocurrency mining malware is installed on victims’ machines.
